Kiwi import Jackson Beresford made an instant impact on his Harrogate League debut by firing Harrogate 1sts to the top of the Division One table.
The youngster from Canterbury, New Zealand, is visiting the squash hotbed of Yorkshire to improve his game, and his 3-0 dismissal of Harlow 1's John Simpson (who had won both his previous matches this season in straight games) indicated that the Harrogate League, for all its charms, may not be the grandest stage Beresford competes on during his onward career.
Harrogate 1's Simon Myring and Ollie Hotchkiss also won on the night, conquering the previously-unbeaten Richard Leonard and Steve Smith for a 3-0 team victory which emphatically toppled Harlow 1 from the Division One summit.
Chapel Allerton 1 rose to second place, also with a 100% record after three matches. Crucially, Ross Williamson won 12/10 in the fifth at No.2 string against Otley 1's Mark Swift. That levelled matters after Otley's Matt Wood had beaten veteran Randolph Victor at No.3. Declan Christie finished off Chapel A's 2-1 conquest with a routine straight-games win at No.1.
Chapel Allerton 2 lie in third after a 3-0 away win at Collingham 1 - John Riley, Richard Hinds and Ian Hogg all winning comfortably. In Monday's other fixture, north Leeds outfit Adel picked up their first win of the season; John Plowman, Dan Houchen and Danny Groom all winning against an Aireborough side lacking top-level experience.
In Division Two, Chapel Allerton 5 lead the way by four points after victory in the crunch derby with Chapel Allerton 4. It was a repeat of last season's 5-man B Cup final in which, if memory serves, the 5ths also triumphed. Mike Robinson crucially failed to convert a fourth-game game-ball in a bruising and entertaining match with the metronomic Bobby Pearson, but victories for lanky No.3 Mike Dale and No.1 Tim Manuel - on his 40th birthday - saw the 5ths home and made Tim's caterpillar chocolate cake taste even sweeter.
Harrogate 2 move into second place after a long night at Otley 2. Steve Whiteley and Peter Hotchkiss both held their nerve in the fifth in marathon encounters with Jim Brogden and Haydn Stewart. Collingham 2 are third, winning 3-0 against the division's whipping boys Chapel Allerton 6, although Dan Adams and Nick Williams were both taken to five by James Steingold and Tim Belcher at No.2 and 3.
Into Division Three and a three-team title race already seems to be emerging, with Ilkley 1, Chapel Allerton 7 and Adel 3 all boasting unblemished records so far. Ilkley 1 walloped bottom side Adel 4 with three 3-0 wins, Chapel Allerton 7 easily won the derby with winless Chapel Allerton 8, while Adel 3's defeat of fourth-placed Otley 3 was a closer affair, with Kevin Jackson's 3-2 win at No.2 string the pivotal moment.
Division Four is into its second week, and with copy deadline approaching only half this week's results had been entered (come on, home captains!). Ilkley 3 and Collingham 5 top the table as things stand, but the winner of Adel 5 v David Lloyd 1 could well leapfrog that duo to top the table. We await the result with breath abated!
If anyone's still reading this far down; firstly congratulations, and secondly, please feel free to post reports, comments and pics on the Kall Kwik Harrogate League Facebook page and I'll include them in next week's round-up. Best of luck to all for next Monday and Tuesday!
