NEWS: Revamped singles competition
14 Feb 2018

This season's singles competition will completely change in format and will take place over the course of one weekend. To maximise participation and to ensure that there is a suitable tournament for everyone in the league, we’re not just going to having one singles competition for each division but different graded competitions linked in part to a Division but also linked to Squash Levels rankings. Here are all the details:

The competitions

  • There will be six competitions in total this year with entry eligibility being as follows:
    • A grade – open to all Division 1 players
    • B grade – open to all Division 2 players and Division 1 players with a squash levels rating of less than 3,200
    • C grade – open to all Division 3 players and Division 2 players with a squash levels rating of less than 2,400
    • D grade – open to all Division 4 players and Division 3 players with a squash levels rating of less than 1,700
    • E grade – open to all Division 4 players below a 1,500 squash levels rating
    • Vets – over 50’s potentially split A and B depending on the number and quality of entrants
  • Players must have played at least twice in their respective divisions this season to be eligible
  • The above structure should put players that play at 2-3 of a particular division against the players that play at 1-2 of the division below – which will hopefully make good, competitive tournaments all round
  • Squash Levels rankings will be struck based on the rankings at the end of the season
  • However, while the above gives a guide to competition eligibility, there will also be committee discretion applied to make sure we don’t have any anomalies
  • If you would like to check the squash levels ratings, you can do so here.

The format

  • The format will be determined by the number of entrants – if there are fewer than 8 entrants to a competition then that tournament will be in MONRAD style. If we have 9 or more entrants to that tournament, we will revert to the more traditional knockout style.
  • As a result, all players are likely to play at least three games in each competition – with one of those games being on the Friday night and then the subsequent games taking place on Saturday afternoon/evening.
  • Scoring will be PAR to 11 IN ALL GRADE COMPETITIONS
  • We are also looking to get formal, impartial referees involved in the event, although this will be confirmed

Timing

·       This will all take place over the weekend of Friday 13th April (6pm onwards) and into Saturday 14th April (1.30pm onwards) at Harrogate Squash Club with finals expected at c. 6pm on the Saturday

·       In addition, as previously mentioned, the league trophies will also be presented that night to the relevant winning teams of each division.

Cost / Prizes

  • There will be an entry fee of £10 per player for each competition
  • There will be a cash prize for the winner of each competition which will be set in due course, depending on the number of entrants.
  • To give you an idea, we are expecting first place to be £50 to £100 in each competition. There will also be runners up prizes as well.

How to enter

  • Deadline for entry will be 30th March 2018
  • Individuals wanting to enter need to email both edwardsquash@msn.com and mail@tonynorwood.com with their name, email address and the details of the competition(s) that they wish to enter.
  • They will then be emailed back confirming their entry and be given the details of the bank account to which they need to transfer their entry fees. Obviously, only those entries which fees have been paid will be valid for entry into the competition

Please can you share this among your teams and clubmates. The higher the number of entrants we get the better the competition will be, and the sooner we get those entries the earlier we will be able to give you clarity on both the structure of the competition and, most importantly, the cash prize!

Let the entries roll in!
